Facebook: Good or Bad?

People all around the world view the social network, Facebook, very differently. Some people think it is an awesome thing, while others think it is a serious invasion of privacy and young kids should not be exposed to something so invasive. Personally, I can see where both sides come into play.

When it comes to an invasion of privacy, I remember reading in our book a story about an African American male who applied to Harvard and was accepted, only later to be denied because of suspicion of being involved in gang activity on his Facebook page. I think this is a sad incident because I do not think it is right to judge a person by what is on their Facebook page, but at the same time, I think he should be held responsible for the things he posts on the Internet for the whole world to see.

On the positive side of Facebook, it is a place for people to stay connected even though they can be miles away from each other. I have experienced this personally. About 3 years ago, my best friend had to move across the country to Seattle because of her dad's work. Facebook has allowed her and I to remain close and communicate and share experiences just like before she moved away. I believe Facebook can be positive and negative, it just depends on the personal experiences you have had.

  1. I also thought the part in the text about the boy that got rejected from Harvard because of his Facebook page was very unfortunate. The people viewing his profile should've taken the time to contemplate why his page was the way it was, or at least given him a chance to explain it. I think there are two users of Facebook. The people who are themselves and simply use it to stay connected with friends and possibly meet new people, or the ones who create false identities and basically live in a different world over the internet. This chapter was definitely interesting considering how popular social networking sites are at this point in time. I could relate many things from my own life to what the author was talking about.

  2. I agree, Facebook, along with anything on the internet has it's ups and downs. I personally am grateful for it for the social experience, but when it comes to others using it for other reasons, it becomes complicated. I recently heard that certain jobs will look at applicants facebook pages to decide if they are worthy of the job or not. While this is a good idea to get a view of their personal life, it is scary for the applicant. One can be as outgoing as they want online, yet be a very hard worker. My opinion: rather be safe than sorry! So I at least attempt to censor my page.
